TON 618, alternatively capitalized Ton 618, is a monstrous, hyperluminous radio quasar sitting in the constellation of Canes Venatici, 18.2 billion light-years away from Earth. [1] It was once thought to be a small blue star within the Milky Way, but its actually one of the brightest known quasars.

In 1970, a radio survey at Bologna in Italy discovered radio emission from Ton 618, indicating that it was a quasar. Marie-Helene Ulrich then obtained optical spectra of Ton 618 at the McDonald Observatory which showed emission lines typical of a quasar.
